In the column “The Story Behind the Brand,” we present the path of an ordinary person to worldwide recognition.
One of the pioneers in soft drinks is the Schweppes brand. Jacob Schweppe was born in Germany in 1740. A skilled young man, he began working as a jeweller in Geneva. In his free time, he read extensively and took an interest in chemistry and physics. That is how he came across an English scientist’s discovery about saturating water with carbon dioxide. Schweppe decided this was a promising market niche, left his job, and devoted himself to developing a carbonation device. His efforts were successful and, in 1783, the Schweppes brand was born; shortly afterward, it was appointed a royal purveyor in London.
The brand is more than 200 years old, and Schweppes is the oldest carbonated drink produced in the world. This is one of the greatest advantages of a brand as an object of intellectual property — the registration can be renewed an unlimited number of times, giving the brand literally centuries of protection.
